Core Job Description
Responsible for developing and managing a peer support program serving participants in the San Francisco Superior Court’s Behavioral Health, Drug and Veteran’s Justice Court programs. In collaboration with the Project manager, develops policies and procedures, supervises and supports peer mentors, and ensures the provision of high quality services. Conducts intake interviews, makes clinical assessments, collects and records program data, works collaboratively with Mentoring and Peer Support (MAPS) team, collaborative courts staff, and community providers. Adheres to all State, Federal and County documentation standards and HIPAA regulations. Is computer literate and competent in electronic health record documentation. Master’s in social work, psychology or related discipline and license eligibility required.
Summary of Major Job Responsibilities
Under administrative direction and clinical supervision, manages daily operations of MAPS Program. As a staff member, the Therapist is responsible for the mission of Jail Behavioral Health and Reentry Services as outlined in the specific areas of responsibility.
Specific Areas of Responsibilities
• Assists in recruiting, hiring, and training peer mentors
• Provides regular supervision and support to peer mentors
• Assists Project Manager with developing MAPS program policies and procedures
• Works with the Project Manager to develop MAPS training materials, screening and assessment tools, and data collection tools.
• Ensures accurate and complete data collection.
• Acts as a liaison with community treatment providers, San Francisco Superior Court Collaborative Courts Program staff, probation, parole and other agencies as needed
• Conducts trainings on the MAPS Program for Collaborative Courts staff and community stakeholders.
• Oversees day to day operations of MAPS program including screening of participants, monitoring data collection and ensuring compliance with grant requirements.
• Ensures that MAPS staff submits appropriate paperwork and documentation related to program services and participant contacts.
• Works with the Department of Public Health to ensure that data collection for the project is collected, complete, and submitted in a timely manner.
• Assists with grant reports, as needed.
• Works closely with Community Behavioral Health Services and attends meetings as needed.
• Wears appropriate, professional court attire on all workdays.
• Attends court, as needed.
• Works closely with the Project Manager on program development.
• Arranges intake interviews for eligible participants.
• Routinely assesses for client safety.
• Provides group therapy services (may be at a variety of locations).
• Charts on patients.
• Develops treatment plans.
• Follows all policies and procedures of the program.
• Provides psychological consultation.
• If unlicensed, presents cases for group supervision and peer review
• Demonstrates commitment to the continued development of multi-cultural understanding through trainings, workshops, reading, etc.
• Registered with the Board of Behavioral Science Examiners.
• A minimum of 5 years professional experience in behavioral health treatment and experience training and supervising human service peer workers.
• Experience in health projects management, coordination, and/or capacity building.
• Experience with training, data management, and reporting.
• Experience working with the chronically mentally ill, personality disordered and substance abusing populations.
• Working knowledge of DSM IV-TR and DSM 5 diagnoses.
• Knowledge of psychological theory and treatment in community settings, crisis intervention, mental status evaluation, suicide prevention, drug and alcohol treatment, brief therapy and group therapy.
• Sensitivity to and experience working with the ethnically, culturally, socially, and sexually diverse individuals, communities, agencies, and organizations which comprise the constituency of Jail Health Services.
• Working knowledge of psychiatric medications.
• Ability to work independently within a multidisciplinary team and interact effectively with the medical and criminal justice system as well as community providers in order to facilitate comprehensive mental health care delivery.
• Ability to respond quickly and use good judgment in unusual and emergency situations.
• Ability to work with prisoners in a jail environment.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a jail clearance.
• Willingness to work with clients in the community.
• Proficiency in computer usage, including Microsoft Office products (Excel, Outlook and Word).
• Good communication skills.
• Good attention to detail.
• Ability to get to all of San Francisco’s jails and treatment facilities.
• Cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification.
• Ability to type.
Essential Job Functions and Physical Demands
Ability to read and write, and to use a telephone and a computer. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, hear, stand, and walk. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, use hands to finger or handle, and climb. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision and ability to adjust focus. Working in a jail frequently exposes the employee to moderate levels of noise. Occasionally, the employee will be exposed to loud noise, fumes, airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. Employees work with criminal offenders, some of whom may be dangerous.
